CAN FAD DIETS ACTUALLY MAKE YOU FATTER?
Research studies indicate that many of the current fad diets can cause you to gain fat as a percentage of your body weight.
/Diet - Weight Loss News Articles/ - HOLLAND, OH, February 18, 2008 - Though it may seem contradictory most nutritionists agree that certain "miracle" diets can have the opposite effect on weight loss. Study after study shows that most of the weight loss due to fad diets is temporary and after going off the diet people will gain back the weight lost and add some more.
According to Dr. Marilyn Glenville, PHD, "The reason for this is that your body is actually programmed to hold on to fat. So in times of what your body considers to be a 'famine', it will actually go as far as breaking down muscle and losing water in order to hold on to its fat reserves."
In keeping with this theory, when the body senses that it is being "deprived" it will go into survival mode and store fat reserves for later use. It may actually increase the amount of fat stored in anticipation of another deprivation down the road. The oft used term "yo yo dieting" describes how many people are cycling themselves into obesity.
For instance the low fat or no fat diet can not only be dangerous, but it can increase the amount of one's body fat. One contributing factor to this is the makeup of low fat "diet" foods. Most of them increase the amount of sugar and salt they contain to make up for the bland taste. The sugar can raise the levels of insulin in the body. Insulin is a powerful hormone that helps the body store fat.
So what's the solution to the dieting rollercoaster? Many specialists counsel their patients to avoid diets that exclude whole food groups. This is unhealthy and unnecessary as it is more important to make wise choices within the food groups. For instance, instead of eliminating bread from your diet, you can switch to whole wheat or cracked wheat bread. These are less likely to spike your insulin and contribute to weight gain.
According to Tom Miller at rippedover40.com, the key to healthy weight loss is not just to lose weight, it's to lose fat. This can be achieved with a balanced diet where you choose your foods wisely and of course engage in a sensible exercise program. The three legged stool of weight loss has smart food choices, exercise and motivation at its base.
For people over 40 this is even more critical. As we age our metabolism slows down making it all the more difficult to lose fat. You have to trick your body into using up stored fat with smart food choices and exercise that specifically increases your metabolism.
www.rippedover40.com was founded to provide consumers with a weight loss system that boosts their bodies ability to burn fat and build lean muscle mass. The site offers a free newsletter and actual user success stories.
