Transform revealed that although there has been a 44 per cent increase in the procedure across the UK, the group's Scottish clinics have seen the popularity of the procedure increase by 80 per cent from 2007 with 40 operations being carried out in 2008 compared to 2007's 22.

Transform's Scottish clinics also found that the number of enquiries for the procedure ballooned in the spring time from men who were preparing to shed layers of clothing during the Scottish summer months.

Shami Thomas, spokesperson for Transform said "Unfortunately for many men, and women, there is an element of fear surrounding summer months because it means having to wear skimpy clothes which reveal every flaw. When you should be relaxing on the beach or at a pool party, many holidays are overshadowed by anxiety and tension over exposing body hang-ups.

"Men with moobs often hide under thick layers and jackets during the winter but find these months particularly difficult as they can't mask their male breasts under skimpy t-shirts. It can also be uncomfortable in the warm weather to be carrying the excess weight which can cause sweat patches and chaffing; all the makings of a miserable holiday."

Scottish golfer Colin Montgomerie hit the headlines last year after Jack Vettriano allegedly declined to paint the Scots ambassador saying he "does not do men with breasts". The artist caused a great divide between mockers and sympathisers of the affliction and highlighted the issue for men across Scotland and the kind of criticism they come under. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair and leader of the opposition David Cameron were both mocked in the tabloids last year for their appearance on summer holidays.

Even though celebs like James Corden have been known to laugh the matter off, the male body has come under increased scrutiny in the past couple of years with magazines like Glamour featuring regular segments such as 'guy without a shirt' and Heat magazine featuring 'torso of the week'. The focus on male celebrities and their physical flaws, particularly moob sufferers, has seemingly put the same pressure on the average man to look good as has been attributed to women for decades.

Although full Scottish breakfasts and Scotch pies may play a large part in boosting the male cup size, Shami Thomas said: "Even slim men can suffer from prominent 'man-breasts'. The condition, known as gynaecomastia, sees breast tissue grow due to a hormonal imbalance so it isn't necessarily related to obesity.

"Although there has been a negative fascination with 'moobs' in the media it has actually resulted in an increased awareness of the condition across the Scotland. Scottish men are realising that they aren't living in isolation, this isn't a rare condition and there is a solution to their problem in gynoplasty surgery; a relatively simple cosmetic procedure.

Shami also revealed that workers of all ages are using their redundancy money for cosmetic surgery to help them compete in the shrinking jobs market and this will also have helped the surge in man boob removal surgery.

"The cosmetic surgery industry in Scotland doesn't seem to have been affected by recession. It seems that in times of economic hardship people still want to look good and are willing to sacrifice other luxuries to pay for it."

The most popular types of surgery for men in Scotland are nose jobs (rhinoplasty), eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), liposuction and face lifts with moob jobs jumping to the 4th most popular procedure.
